Volunteer Opportunities

Food For Families is a cooperative effort between the North Texas Food Bank and more than 25 member agencies, and supplies supplemental food to families.

Clients of the cooperating agencies have been pre-qualified and bring an agency issued voucher for food distribution. Clients meet agency volunteers at a specific parking lot at a specific time. A drive-through line is organized and agency volunteers distribute food directly to clients.

During fiscal year 2006, over 1,579,374 pounds of food was distributed to 16,114 families and over 66,968 individuals.

Distributions take place in Dallas county every Friday, and on two Thursdays at 8 different locations each month.

Operation Frontline – The North Texas Food Bank is one of 9 food banks throughout the country to offer its member agencies Operation Frontline. Nutrition Education Manager Kaitlin Hammond and Nutrition Education Coordinator Katherine Lindholm, work with our member agencies and their clients to provide them with classes on nutrition, healthy cooking, food budgeting, and food safety. Volunteer positions include Chef Instructor, Nutrition Instructor, Grocery Shopper, and Classroom Manager.

For specific dates, times, and locations, please email Katherine Lindholm or call her at 214.431.4718. If you are unable to reach Katherine, you may contact Kaitlin Hammond by email or call 214.347.9608.

Community Kitchen – The Community Kitchen operates as a commissary to nonprofit agencies serving prepared meals to the hungry. The kitchen offers fully prepared frozen meals to heat and serve. The mission of the kitchen is two-fold: offer agencies nutritious prepared foods, while providing culinary job skills training to disadvantaged individuals who have an interest in developing a career in foodservice. The kitchen is 3,000 square feet and, once at capacity, will produce 10,000 meals weekly while providing foodservice training to approximately 80 people a year.

Volunteer opportunities include assisting the Training Chef with conducting the curriculum (if qualified) and/or getting involved with daily production.

Times: 9 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.

For more information email James Williams or call him at 214.330.1396, ext. 257.

Please keep in mind any physical limitations that you might have as some of our volunteer opportunities may require lifting.
